Valencia defender David Navarro has called on his team-mates to move past the hurt of their Champions League exit and focus on La Liga.
The Spanish outfit were bundled out in the last 16 by Bundesliga side Schalke, courtesy of a 3-1 second-leg loss Wednesday in Germany.
After losing the tie 4-2 on aggregate, Valencia must now regroup in time to face Real Zaragoza in La Liga on Saturday, with their spot in the top three under threat from Villarreal.
Navarro said there would be time to mourn Wednesday’s disappointing loss, but his team-mates must immediately avert their concentration to their league campaign.
“It’s obviously a painful defeat, but now is the time to forget about it,” Navarro said.
“In two days’ time we have a very important game, and matches against teams like Zaragoza are what will allow us to have the opportunity to play in the Champions League next season.”
“We know that it is an unfair defeat (against Schalke), and that we deserved to win, but we have to move on.”
“I’m sure that we will talk today or tomorrow, but it’s true that we don’t deserve to be out. We had many more clear chances than them.”
“This is football, and regretting things doesn’t do anyone any good. We have to improve whatever went wrong against Schalke, and focus on the game against Zaragoza. That is the most important match at the moment.”
