Spanish Liga leaders Valencia CF were thirteen minutes away from having to play extra time with Portuguese side Maritimo Funchal, but then woke up to decide the clash.
Valencia had won the first leg 0-1 in Funchal, but Maritimo levelled the aggregate score through Marcinho in the 39th minute.
The Spanish needed to attack while avoiding a second Portuguese goal, one that would have meant a big step towards the next round for the guests.
But Asier del Horno allowed the home crowd to relax by scoring for 1-1 in the 77th minute.
Striker David Villa had a goal disallowed for off-side in the 91st minute, but converted a penalty shortly after to make it 2-1, and 3-1 on aggregate.
