World Cup winning defender Carlos Marchena has sealed his transfer from Valencia CF to local rivals Villarreal. The 31 year old has signed a three year contract with the Yellow Submarines and leaves the Mestalla after nearly a decade with Los Che.

Las Cabezas born Marchena started his career with Andalusian outfit Sevilla and spent three years before moving to Portuguese giants Benfica. A season later, he was back in Spain with Valencia.

Marchena was named in UEFA’s Euro 2008 team of the tournament. At the 2010 World Cup, he did not feature regularly in the Spanish defence, having lost his spot to Barcelona centre half Gerard Pique.
