(GSM) – Bayern München’s Mark van Bommel has revealed that the club management supported his decision to train with the Netherlands squad ahead of their friendly with Turkey despite his injury problems.
Van Bommel, who has not played recently after recurring knee problems, was an unused substitute in Bayern’s victory over Nurnberg in the Bundesliga on Sunday.
Despite lack of games under his belt, the 33-year-old was still selected for the Dutch squad to face Turkey.
It seemed Oranje boss Bert van Marwijk’s decision to call van Bomnel would have added to the strain between Bayern and the Dutch football association (KNVB).
Bayern had asked for Van Bommel to be released before the Euro 2012 qualifier against Sweden last month because of his injury problems but Netherlands coach Van Marwijk claimed he was fit and he played for 70 minutes.
The club had already been in dispute with the KNVB after Arjen Robben returned from the World Cup with a hamstring injury.
Bayern chief Karl-Heinz Rummenigge then issued a warning for Van Bommel not to play in the game in Amsterdam.
However, Van Bommel is adamant he has the full backing of his club to train with the Dutch squad although he refused to say whether they had advised him not to travel.
Van Bommel told www.ad.nl: “It makes no sense to talk about things that do not matter. I’m fully fit and Mr Rummenigge, (president Uli) Hoeness and coach (Louis) van Gaal thought it was a good idea. I have talked extensively with them.
“I am quite fit and am looking forward to Wednesday. So this week 75% of Bayern Munich players are on the road. I can train here at Oranje with world-class players and play football. That’s just good.”
