(GSM) – Louis van Gaal’s positon at Bayern Munich seems secure for now. By beating Maccabi Haifa on Tuesday (1-0) they revived their chances of reaching the last 16 in the Champions League. “If we hadn’t beat Maccabi Haifa, it would’ve become very hard for Van Gaal. That would’ve put even more pressure on him,” Van Bommel told Dutch paper AD.

“But it’s nonsense to say that we won for the coach,” said Van Bommel. “A footballer doesn’t play for his coach, that would be strange. But the victory over Haifa was definitely very important.” Bayern has to defeat Juventus in the last group game to advance to the knockout stages.

Der Rekordmeister’s board demands better results in the Bundesliga too. Bayern currently sit seventh in the league table with 21 points from thirteen games. “We need another five wins,” the Dutch midfielder calculates. “Beating Maccabi was very important but we’re not there yet.” Bayern faces Hannover 96 this weekend. Hannover lie tenth in the table, five points adrift of Bayern.
