AC Milan midfielder Mark van Bommel was pleased to see Serie A rivals Inter and Napoli drop points in defeats to Catania and Parma, respectively.
Van Bommel and his team gained ground on their title opponents beating Palermo 3-0 in their Saturday night clash at San Siro.
Inter and Napoli were expected to come good against Catania and Parma, but both lost. Claudio Ranieri’s men threw away a lead in Sicily to succumb 2-1, while Walter Mazzarri’s men were defeated by the same scoreline.
After the match, CEO Adriano Galliani said his side would challenge for the title, and while van Bommel is not as confident as the Italian, he agrees that if rivals miss opportunities then it makes life easier in the long term.
“We have to look at what we are doing, but it’s true that if others drop points then it is a good thing for us,” van Bommel told Milan Channel.
Milan are understood to be looking to strengthen in January, with reports suggesting a midfielder could arrive to tighten the screws in the middle of the park, and the Dutchman welcomes any further additions to the team.
“If a good player arrives then I would be very happy. It’s always good when a decent player arrives at Milan,” the 34-year-old said.
Milan now move on to play Belarus side BATE Borisov in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
