Van Buyten linked with Bayern return

Belgian media outlet Sudpresse has learned that Bayern Munich hope to re-sign defender Daniel van Buyten.

The 36-year-old rejected several offers after leaving the Bavarians and decided to end his playing career after the 2014 World Cup, but he might be forced to reconsider his retirement plans.

Namely, Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola hopes to persuade the centre back to return to Alianz Arena in the coming days.

Despite signing Mehdi Benatia from AS Roma, the Bavarians are somewhat short of options in the heart of defence after the new setback for Holger Badstuber, and they aim to try and lure Daniel van Buyten back to Alianz Arena.

The highly rated defender had spent eight years with the Bavarians having joined from Hamburg, making a total of 160 Bundesliga appearances.

Bayern Munich face van Buyten’s former club Hamburger SV later today, and they are 1/4 favourites to claim maximum points.
