Ajax CEO Edwin van der Sar has confirmed that Donny van de Beek will be allowed to leave the club in the next transfer window should a suitable offer come.
Having been an important part of the team which reached the Champions League semifinals last season, the 23-year-old midfielder has been heavily linked with Real Madrid and Manchester United. Both of these clubs have been reportedly considering him as an alternative to Paul Pogba – United if they sell the Frenchman, Real if they fail to sign him.
However, Van der Sar’s words won’t have been received that well in Madrid or Manchester. As quoted by a number of outlets across Europe, the former United goalkeeper said that though the transfer market is certain to be affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, potential suitors shouldn’t be expecting Ajax to lower the prices of their players too much.
Quite apart from his warning, Van de Beek is contracted to Ajax until 2022, so there is still no real pressure on the Dutch club to sanction a move under any but their own terms.
