Last winter, he was announced as one of the most interesting signings in the league. When Toronto signed Gregory van der Wiel, he was joining the current champions of MLS Cup, MLS Supporters’ Shield and US Open Cup, but nothing in the end worked out as well as the two sides had hoped for.
Toronto FC and defender Gregory van der Wiel have mutually agreed to part ways, it was announced by the Canadian club on Friday. Such move was, in fact, expected for some time now, as the Dutch defender was not part of the team for the past two months. He was sent home from a pre-season camp in late January after a reported altercation with the team’s coach, Greg Vanney. Since then he was training on his own and now he will need to be on the lookout for the next club.
Van der Wiel made 34 appearances in all competitions last season, providing four assists for his teammates.
