Van der Wiel slams Ajax

Gregory van der Wiel has hit out at Ajax over their attitude toward his future as the Eredivisie champions look to offload the right-back.

The 24-year-old’s contract with the Amsterdam giants is due to expire at the end of the 2012/13 campaign and Ajax are desperate to cash in on the wing-back in the transfer window in order to prevent him leaving on a free next year.

“I now know the club’s policy. It’s become clear to me that Ajax just want to make money off me. That’s why they’re pressuring me. It’s never a good thing when your club wants you to leave,” van der Wiel told Algemeen Dagblad.

“It’s apparently no longer an option to stay. It’s not up to me anymore. I do hope that the club realises I’ve been here since the age of seven. It’s always been my dream to play here and I’ve always given 100 percent. And I will continue to do so until the end.”

Ajax coach Frank de Boer was far from impressed with van der Wiel’s comments, however, and revealed that they informed the defender of their plan at the end of last season.

“Pressuring him? We have a certain policy and we’ve told Gregory about that two months ago. This is something completely normal. He knows what he has to do,” de Boer said.

“We are happy to let go of him if the price is right. And there’s a good chance that he’ll get plenty of playing time if he stays. He might play every game, he might play just occasionally.”

Van der Wiel has made over 180 competitive appearances for Ajax since making his official debut in March 2007.
