As reported by the Mirror, Virgil van Dijk is keen to sign a new contract with Liverpool.
The 33-year-old captain at both Liverpool and Netherlands is one of the three Reds stars whose contracts have nine months left to run, together with Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold. Quite apart from the lack of any transfer activity this summer, the fact that the Merseyside club has allowed these players’ deals to come so close to their expiration dates has raised eyebrows.
But it seems Liverpool have taken a “better late than never” attitude in this matter, with recent reports claiming they’re set to open talks with Salah over a new deal. It is understood that the Egyptian winger would prefer staying to leaving, and now it seems the same goes for Van Dijk.
Following Netherlands exit from the Euros this year at the hands of England in the semifinals, the experienced defender spoke about his future being uncertain after the departure of Jurgen Klopp from the Anfield dugout, and hinted at a possibility of retirement from international football as well.
However, having settled down and fitted straight into the plans of new Liverpool coach Arne Slot, he is now keen to lead his country at the 2026 World Cup, and he needs to be playing at the highest club level for that to happen. Therefore, signing a new contract at Liverpool, where he’s made 273 competitive appearances, makes sense.
