Van Gaal angry as Bayern held by bottom side

Bayern Munich coach Louis van Gaal said he was angry with his side for thowing away three points after they were held to a 3-3 draw by bottom side Borussia Moenchengladbach in the Bundesliga.

With league leaders Borussia Dortmund playing on Sunday, the result leaves defending champions Bayern ninth in the league and nine points from top spot.

Bayern were stunned on Saturday when a wonderful long-range goal by Gladbach midfielder Patrick Herrmann caught the defence napping after only five minutes at Munich’s Allianz Arena.

Germany striker Mario Gomez equalised before midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger netted with a simple tap-in after a pass from Danijel Pranjic to put the hosts 2-1 up just after 40 minutes.

But Schweinsteiger then missed a penalty when he fired his shot against the post and his failure cost Bayern dear.

Gladbach equalised when midfielder Marco Reus netted in the 56th minute after sending Bayern goalkeeper Hans-Joerg Butt the wrong way, before Belgium striker Igor de Camargo scored on the hour mark to make it 3-2.

Bayern captain Philipp Lahm earned his side a point with six minutes remaining when he slammed a shot past Gladbach keeper Christofer Heimeroth.

“We threw it away and I was very disappointed and actually a bit angry with my players, because we were superior in the first half and missed many opportunities,” said van Gaal.

“We could have been three, four or five-one up at half-time.

“We gave away two goals in the first ten minutes after the break. After that, our strength and work-rate was unbelievable and it was an extraordinary performance, but those ten minutes settled it, and that?s what I?ve told my players.

“The players are disappointed, and I?m aware of that — but it shouldn?t be happening.”

Bayern dominated their opponents and enjoyed more than 70 percent of possession during the game, yet looked destined for defeat until Lahm rescued his side.

“That game should never have ended in a draw, not in a million years, it?s a catastrophe,” said Gomez.

“We were outstanding in the first half, we created chances and should have been much further ahead.

“I think Gladbach had the luck today, which has deserted them in recent weeks and luck certainly wasn?t on our side, but at the end of the day, we?re gutted.”

With his side rooted to the bottom of the league table with just seven points from 11 games and a goal difference of minus 16, Gladbach coach Michael Frontzeck praised his side for their fighting spirit.

“We?ve rarely been played off the park the way we were in the first half,” he said. “We were lucky to make it to half-time only 2-1 down.

“Bayern were outstanding. We upped our game after half-time and led 3-2, but Bayern have the quality to come back and equalise.

“We showed great resolve to fight back and make it 3-2 after half-time, so all credit to my team.”
