Fans of Premier League giants Manchester United will remember the name Louis van Gaal with little fondness, but the Dutch tactician could be set for a shock return to English football as manager of Everton, according to the Guardian.
The Toffees recently fired Ronald Koeman, another Dutch manager who didn’t quite live up to his stellar reputation, and the Merseyside club are yet to find a replacement. They have been heavily linked with a swoop for Watford manager Marco Silva, but now it appears they have turned their attention to Van Gaal.
The 66-year old has actually had a hugely successful managerial career, winning a Bundesliga title with Bayern Munich and two La Liga titles with Barcelona, but his most successful spell came in charge of Ajax. The Dutch club won three Eredivisie titles and a Champions League under Van Gaal’s tenure, helping the coach to the 1995 World Soccer Manager of the Year award.
His time at Manchester United was marred by criticism of his style of football and a lack of success, but perhaps a fresh start at Everton could swing public opinion back in his favour.
