Bayern Munich coach Louis van Gaal on Friday insisted that he was satisfied with the work of Franck Ribery, despite the French winger having asked for more freedom on the pitch.

“I’m happy with his work,” said van Gaal, ahead of Bayern’s Bundesliga encounter at home to promoted St Pauli on Saturday.

“Every player wants to have his freedom, but we play a team sport.”

Ribery, who had been out for eight weeks with an ankle injury, scored a brace in Bayern’s 3-0 victory over Swiss side Basel in their final Champions League group game on Wednesday.

It was his first goal for the club since he scored in the first round of the German Cup in August.

“I think he feels liberated in his head and that’s very important for a player like Franck Ribery,” added van Gaal.

Defending champions Bayern are seventh in the German first division, 17 points behind leaders Borussia Dortmund.
