Van Persie delighted with Rooney pairing

Robin van Persie has heaped praise on fellow Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney after a successful start to the season.

The pair have combined for 10 goals so far, with Van Persie netting eight goals in all competitions.

However, the 29-year-old stressed that his relationship with Rooney has been critical in the early stages of the season.

“Things are going well and our understanding is getting better all the time,” Van Persie told Manchester United TV.

“Everyone could see from day one that we were working well together. We like to play together and we help each other.

“Sometimes Wayne plays at the top, sometimes I do and then he drops in and then you have Danny (Welbeck) coming in from the left sometimes too. I might also go out there for a few minutes in a game or Wazza (Rooney) does. I think it’s only the second or third time that we’ve played in this formation, but the main thing is we’ve had a good game and got three points.”

Rooney scored his first club goals of the season on Saturday against Stoke City, where he made up for his early own goal by netting twice to add to strikes from Welbeck and Van Persie.

The Dutchman is impressed with Manchester United’s attack, insisting that they are creating chances from different positions.

“We can score from any angle,” Van Persie said. “The first one against Stoke was from a cross from the left and a good header, the second was from a low cross, the third came from a cross again from the opposite side (to the first) and then the fourth goal came from a corner.

“So we’ve scored all sorts of different goals. In previous games as well we’ve shown we can score from every sort of angle which is a good sign and a good weapon for us.”

Manchester United are currently second in the Premier League with 18 points from eight games.
