Arsenal fans may remember the name Thomas Vermaelen but the Belgian defender has faded into relative obscurity, despite playing for one of the world’s best teams. A spot on the Barcelona bench, and often also in the medical room, has been the centre half’s existence since 2014, and even a loan spell at Roma last season couldn’t spark a run of game time or form.
However another Italian club may yet provide Vermaelen’s saving grace and give him one last shot at salvaging his injury prone career. According to Spanish publication Sport, Inter Milan are set to bring the Belgian in to strengthen their defence, which is currently lacking any real depth beyond untested youth players.
The Belgian has made just 22 appearances for Barcelona in total and only half of these came in La Liga. Muscle injuries have severely hampered his ability to string together any consistent game time and at the age of 31 a move to Inter may represent his last chance to play competitive, top level football.
