Vermes predicts Kansas success

Sporting Kansas City coach Peter Vermes has his sights set on silverware beyond the new MLS season.

The Eastern Conference champions made it to the MLS playoffs last year and although the new MLS season is only one round old, Vermes is predicting a bright future.

“I understand the expectation, I think it’s great,” Vermes said.

” I think that (winning six or seven consecutive MLS Cups) is what we’ve got to be shooting for. We’ve tried to build a team that has a core group of guys that are going to keep coming back year after year. We’re putting a lot in to those guys.”

:A lot of investment in to those guys to make sure they’re the group. We think we have a solid core group that has a chance of gaining some success over the next so many years.”

Sporting KC’s stadium, Livestrong Sporting Park, provides the most visible evidence of the club’s enviable set-up.

But Vermes recognises that his side will not succeed without a shared philosophy.

“We have a great front office, incredible ownership, and I think our technical staff is a good one,” he said.

“All the way down to our academy, there’s just a real nice synergy within everybody. And I think that’s one of the reasons that when people come here, it’s almost like they’ve come home because they feel comfortable here.”

“And it’s all the way through. Throughout the entire organisation. And I think that’s why a lot of guys want to come and play for Sporting Kansas City.”

Sporting KC’s home campaign kicks off on Saturday when they host New England Revolution.

New England finished bottom of the Eastern Conference last year and will be looking to atone for an opening-day defeat to San Jose Earthquakes.
