Tottenham will continue negotiations with Ajax on Saturday over Jan Vertonghen after the clubs failed to reach an agreement on Friday.
The 25-year-old’s future has been the subject of intense speculation since he expressed a desire to leave Eredivisie champions Ajax.
Vertonghen, who has also been linked with Spurs’ north London rivals Arsenal, had hoped his transfer would be sealed by now, but had to return to pre-season training at Ajax.
One major obstacle in the transfer discussions is reportedly Vertonghen’s entitlement to a percentage of the transfer fee.
The Belgium international believes he is due approximately 15 percent of the overall sum, but Ajax are holding firm on parting with that much of the proposed nine million-pound fee.
There have also been suggestions Vertonghen may seek to play out the final year of his contract before sealing his departure to Spurs or elsewhere a free transfer next year.
“We have nothing agreed at this moment,” Nakhi Mondial of Vertonghen’s management agency said.
“The talks were not easy but we are going to try again, maybe on Saturday.”
If the deal goes through, Vertonghen will join recent Spurs arrivals Gylfi Sigurdsson and Ezekiel Fryers, as well as newly appointed manager Andre Villas-Boas.
