FK Crvena Zvezda – or Red Star as referred to by the English speaking world – are the former European and World champions.
It was in 1991 that Red Star defeated Marseille to lift the European Cup trophy, before the Champions League format has been introduced and failed to get into the elite club competition ever since.
The Belgrade behemoths came from two goals down in the return leg of the Champions League play-off at Salzburg on Wednesday night and reached the group stage of the Champions League for the first time ever off the back of an impressive display in a 2-2 draw.
Back with the elite group of clubs – albeit in a different format of the competition they won a long time ago – Red Star and their fans erupt in celebration after the final whistle in Austria last night.
The Red Star fans invaded the pitch and went on to strip the players, taking their shirts and shorts as souvenirs. Not all players were exactly keen on giving away their gear though. Just pay attention to former Olympiacos star Ben. He was rather determined to keep his shirt to himself.
Crvena Zvezda aka Red Star Belgrade have qualified for the CL group stages for the first time ever.
