Villa ready to pounce for Jenas

Aston Villa boss Martin O’Neill is weighing up a £10million move for Tottenham midfielder Jermaine Jenas.
O’Neill has been strongly linked with a move to Villa Park over the summer, but Fabian Delph’s switch to the Midlands was believed to have cooled Villa’s interest in Jenas within football news.
However Villa are still very keen on landing the 26-year-old, who has not featured in Spurs’ first two games of the season.
Tottenham chief Harry Redknapp has gone with the midfield partnership of Wilson Palacios and Tom Huddlestone and could be tempted to offload Jenas if the club recoup the £9million they paid Newcastle on transfer deadline day in 2005.
Redknapp is an admirer of Jenas, but has so far opted for the balance of Huddlestone and Palacios and Jenas’ lack of involvement early on in the season could increase the football odds of a move over to Villa.
Jenas declared his satisfaction with life at White Hart Lane earlier in the summer when Villa were first mentioned in connection with the England international and Spurs also confirmed there had been no contact with Villa.
However O’Neill is believed to want Jenas to replace Gareth Barry and become Villa’s midfield kingpin and the former Newcastle man might well be tempted by a move before the end of the transfer window at the end of August.
O’Neill is also desperate to bolster his defence with Matthew Upson, Sylvain Distin and James Collins on his list of targets.
The Villa boss is eager to bring in proven quality at the heart of his back four to supplement Carlos Cuellar and Curtis Davies.
The retirement of Martin Laursen and the sale of Zat Knight to Bolton for £3million has left him short in that department.
