Aston Villa want Chelsea’s Sidwell to replace Liverpool-bound Barry

Reports from the Daily Mail claim Aston Villa manager Martin O’Neill, is set to step up his attempt to sign 25 year old, Chelsea midfielder Steve Sidwell now that the player has returned from holiday.

O’Neill is hoping to agree a fee with Chelsea which is believed to be in the region of £5 million – and subsequently will start holding talks with the former Reading player about remunerations.

Sidwell joined the Blues on a free transfer in 2007, but found his opportunites limited when competing with the likes of players like Claude Makalele, Micheal Ballack and John Obi Mikel for a regular place alongside Frank Lampard.

Despite rumors which linked the player with Middlesbrough and Everton, Aston Villa emerged as the most interested party and the midfielder knows he is one of O’Neill’s main summer targets. Villa insists that reports last week of a deal already being sorted out with the Blues, were premature.
