Villarreal and Benfica vying for Velez stopper

Portuguese daily newspaper O Jogo has revealed that Villarreal and Benfica are among clubs showing interest in Velez Sarsfield defender Fernando Tobio.

The 24-year-old will become a free agent in less than two months and he is almost certain to leave the Argentine giants in favour of a switch to Europe.

O Jogo has learned that Benfica plan to sign the talented defender in case star player Ezequiel Garay is sold in the summer transfer window.

However, the Eagles could face a stiff competition from the likes of Villarreal and Santos, who are also interested in Tobio’s signature.

The former Argentina Under-20 international has spent his entire career up to date at Velez Sarsfield, making 114 league appearances and scoring 3 goals in total.

Fernando Tobio has been a regular starter for the club over the last two season and it appears he is ready for a new challenge in his career.
