Under fire Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas had nothing but praise for West Bromwich Albion following Chelsea’s 1-0 loss at The Hawthorns on Sunday.
The Blues’ disappointing defeat means that they have only won one of their last seven matches in all competitions, a 3-0 win over 19th-place Bolton Wanderers. Absolutely woeful.
Now then, Northern Ireland defender Gareth McAuley sent The Hawthorns into pandemonium after netting his second English Premier League goal of 2011-12 in the 81st minute on Sunday.
Although Chelsea did put up a fight to get back into the game, they had waited far too long to do so. Nonetheless, West Brom fully deserved to win the game.
“First of all, credit of course to West Brom for a magnificent game, but we just weren’t good enough on the day,” said AVB.
“They won the first ball, every second ball. They were far, far superior to us.
“It was a big disappointment because we didn’t build on the win over Bolton or benefit from this weekend’s fixtures, so poor display.”
At this point, a managerial change at Stamford Bridge is surely a foregone conclusion.
No disrespect to Andre Villas-Boas, but it is undeniable that Chelsea have vastly underachieved this season.
Losing seven Premier League games out of 27 is just not good enough when you consider the amount of capital Roman Abramovich has invested in the squad.
That being said, AVB is not the only man to blame.
The likes of David Luiz and Fernando Torres have consistently been quite poor for the Blues.
Torres, who has scored a meager two league goals in 22 appearances this season, can not seem to find the back of the net at the moment.
Meanwhile, Luiz’s defensive woes have also cost the Blues points on more than one occasion in 2011-12.
To sum up, Chelsea are in ruins and Andre Villas-Boas will likely be the man to take the fall, and perhaps rightfully so.
“Every defeat Chelsea suffers piles more pressure on any manager, or any manager that tastes defeat at a top club,” AVB continued.
“Today it is acceptable that pressure is piled on me a little bit more. It is completely acceptable.”
As previously mentioned, Chelsea have won just one of their last seven fixtures since January 31.
If that’s true, and it is, I can’t imagine any more pressure being piled on the former FC Porto boss without him being sacked.
At the end of the day, every sign is pointing to Villas-Boas losing his job as manager of the Blues.
Will Roman Abramovich sack AVB before the end of the 2011-12 Premier League campaign?
