Villas-Boas happy with point

Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas was delighted with his team’s 1-1 draw against Tottenham at White Hart Lane on Thursday.

Emmanuel Adebayor was on the end of a Gareth Bale cross to put Spurs ahead after eight minutes, but Daniel Sturridge’s ninth league goal of the season 15 minutes later secured a point for Villas-Boas’ side in what was a pulsating affair.

“It’s one of the days that the results really wouldn’t matter I think the performance was outstanding, whatever the outcome, whatever the results,” Villas-Boas said.

“I think it was an outstanding performance.”

“I don’t think that we lost two points.”

“Coming here to White Hart Lane with Tottenham on the actual run on the commitment that they have shown to try to win the league, getting a point here with the happenings during the game I think is excellent in terms of our league challenge.”

Villas-Boas praised his captain John Terry – whose crucial clearance from Adebayor’s shot in the dying stages kept the score at 1-1 – after his first game since discovering he would face charges of racism against QPR’s Anton Ferdinand in court.

“His commitment levels are fantastic,” Vilas-Boas said. “The concentration was fantastic as well and we have seen in the past, great, great performances from him recently.”

“Like I said here before, his performances have increased since the incident happened, (he is a) fantastic player. His commitment is never in doubt and his quality and talent is never in doubt.”

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp, meanwhile, was left ruing injuries to key players after the match.

Key playmaker Rafael van der Vaart pulled a hamstring and looks set to miss all of Tottenham’s festive fixtures, joining Younes Kaboul and Jermaine Defoe on the sidelines.

“After that first 20 or 25 minutes or so we dominated and they scored against the run of play and then they got stronger,” Redknapp said.

“Second half it was difficult. We had to change the way we play, Rafa (van der Vaart) did a hamstring again.”

“And really we had no one to play on the right hand side who’s comfortable playing out there so it was difficult.”

“I had to play Luca (Modric) off the right and I brought another striker on, and they had the extra man in midfield second half.

“It was hard work in there. They outnumbered us in there so they had more possession than us.”
