Villas-Boas keeps Spurs in check

Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas was delighted with his team’s all-round performance during their momentous win over Manchester United.

The London outfit ended their 23-year winless run at Old Trafford with a 3-2 victory over United but with just two points from their opening three games, some sections of the media were questioning Villas-Boas’ ability to lead, having been sacked from Chelsea last season.

However, the former Blues boss said his players always believed they were a chance to get a result at Old Trafford, their second successive league victory.

“We wrote history for our team and the satisfaction comes from that,” Villas-Boas said.

“During the week we spoke to the players and they really felt they could nick a win here and the first and second half is a reflection of that desire and ambition although in different ways.

“In the first half it was the way we attacked and the way we kept the ball and in the second half it was the way we defended and kept our lines close together to hold onto an important result so it comes from that.”

Despite Saturday’s success, Villas-Boas is refusing to get carried away.

Tottenham are fifth as they target a Champions League qualification position but after the weekend’s results, Villas-Boas is taking each week as it comes.

“There are many games to be played and the Premiership is so unpredictable,” the former Porto coach said.

“Today Chelsea had a surprising result against a powerful Arsenal. Man City struggled at Fulham to get the win.

“So you never know what happens in the Premiership and we have to take it on a weekly basis and we can move on from what we did today.”

Spurs will get the chance to continue their good form on Sunday, when they welcome Aston Villa to White Hart Lane.
