Villas-Boas unrepentant for referee outburst

Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas made no apologies for his ‘aggressive’ confrontation with the referee after Chelsea’s 1-0 loss to QPR on Sunday.

The Portugese admitted he confronted referee Chris Foy at the end of the controversial defeat in which he claimed Chelsea, who conceded a ‘soft’ penalty and had two men sent off, should have had three spot-kicks of their own.

“I was aggressive to him,” Villas-Boas told reporters. “I don’t care if he was okay about it.”

“Everybody can have a bad day but this was not a bad day for us. This was a good day. It was a bad day for the referee.”

“Decision by decision, they got wrong. They were unable to make good decisions.”

“I am very disappointed with Chris Foy’s performance because I don’t think he had the courage to take decisions through.”

“He conceded to the crowd and committed tremendous mistakes which influenced our result.”

“He was card happy towards our team. On a normal day with good judgement by the referee, we win the game.”

Villas-Boas highlighted the first-half penalty conceded by David Luiz, the red card given to Jose Bosingwa and the three spot-kicks Chelsea could have had in the second half as evidence of the misjudgements of Foy and his colleagues.

“The sending off for Didier Drigba seemed fair to me,” he said. “But it wasn’t fair that Bosingwa was sent off because JT (John Terry) was there to cover and a yellow card should have been applied.”

“If he gives a soft penalty like that, he has to give a penalty on the opposite side. The Lampard penalty, the pushing on Luiz, the thing with John Terry. If that (Helguson’s penalty) was a penalty, we should have had three penalties.”

Despite the controversy, QPR boss Neil Warnock hailed the win as the greatest of his career and claimed Rangers fans will be talking about it in ’30 or 40 years’.

The 62-year-old, whose managerial career stretches back to 1980, said in his post-match conference: “This is the greatest day of my career because of the importance of it to the fans. This place was absolutely rocking. It was incredible. They will talk about this in 30 or 40 years and why not?”

“I said to (director) Amit (Bhatia) when he brought me here, ‘Wouldn’t it be great just to beat Chelsea?’ To come that far so quickly is just an amazing feat.”

“I can’t fault us today. They’re a great side even with nine men. We had some great opportunities to finish the game off but didn’t have the quality or decision making to do that.”

“Apart from Anelka’s (second-half) header we were all over them. I thought we played well with 11 against 11.”
