As revealed by the club on social media, Ron Vlaar has committed his immediate footballing future to AZ Alkmaar by signing a one-year extension on his current deal. The 33-year-old defender first arrived at the club back in 1996 at the age of just 11, and he remained there until 2006 when he went off in search of new ventures. After spells with Feyenoord and Aston Villa for a total of nine years, he made his big return to AZ back in 2015 and has been there ever since.
There were some question marks surrounding whether or not he’d continue on with the club, but now, those rumours have been put to rest with Vlaar letting the world know that his future lies in Alkmaar.
The club are coming off the back of a season in which they qualified for the UEFA Europa League by finishing third in Eredivisie, 12 points off the pace of champions PSV Eindhoven.
