Croatia defender Sime Vrsaljko is said to have asked Atletico Madrid for a permission to leave the club in January.
The 25-year-old former Sassuolo defender has been linked with a return to Serie A for quite some time with Scudetto contenders Napoli said to be eyeing him as a potential replacement for injured Faouzi Ghoulam.
Partenopei want to mount a more serious Serie A title challenge and make sure to have a competitive squad for the remainder of the season and are said to have identified out-of-favour Atletico defender as their top winter target.
Napoli believe Vrsaljko would be an instant fit in the team having played in Serie A before and the Italian media claim that the player himself has been tempted with a prospect of joining Maurizio Sarri’s side.
Vrsaljko reportedly approached Atletico Madrid club management who are now analyzing his request to be allowed to leave in January.
Croatia international only made three La Liga appearances this season.
