Walker: Spurs goal a big surprise

Tottenham defender Kyle Walker has saluted his strike against Blackburn on Sunday as the best of his fledgling career.

The former Sheffield United man curled home a 35-yard free kick to ensure his side took all three points and moved back into the top-four as they bid for Champions League football next season.

And Walker admitted afterwards that he has not been rehearsing his set pieces and the decision to take it was a spur of the moment decision.

“I don’t even practise free-kicks or anything like that – I just felt it was right and when you get that feeling you are confident. Luckily for me it went in,” he told Sky Sports.

“Rafael van der Vaart placed the ball down and I asked if I could have it, he told me ‘no chance!’ Then, just before he was about to hit it he told me I could take it and that was it from there.

“I think the goal against Arsenal comes close to that but in terms of from a dead-ball situation I have never scored a better one.”

The 21-year-old was named the best young player in the top flight by his peers last weekend, but Walker insists he is only interested in securing a top-four finish for Spurs.

“I’m really thankful to have won the PFA Young Player of the Year award, but we’ve got three games to play and I’m just fully focused on the job we have to do at Tottenham,” he said.

“With the players we have got we are going to dominate most games we play and we pass the ball in the Spurs way, which worked really well for us today. We’ve got three points which is really good and we need to take it from here.

“The top-four chase is in our hands now, they are all winnable matches with the team that we have got so we need to prepare right and see where it takes us.”
