Glasgow giants Rangers’ manager Walter Smith says he wants to assess the future direction of the club before committing himself to a new deal.
New chairman Alastair Johnston has opened contract talks to retain the services of Smith and assistant boss Ally McCoist.
Their current deals expire in January but Smith, 61, admits agreement has yet to be reached.
According to reports, the veteran boss is seeking assurances over cash which would be available to him, with loan signing Jerome Rothen the only new arrival over the summer.
Speaking ahead of the Champions League clash against Sevilla, Smith said: “There’s a lot happening at the club at the moment.
“I am comfortable with the situation as it is at present.
“There is more to it than just signing a new contract.
“There are discussions taking place on what direction the club is going.”
