After Mahmoud Ahmed Ibrahim Hassan, nicknamed Trezeguet, scored in the 21st minute to put Aston Villa ahead against Liverpool at the Villa Park on Saturday, Roberto Firmino scored what looked to have been a fully legitimate equalizer. However, the linesman’s flag went up and the goal was disallowed for offside, and a VAR review confirmed the decision.
Liverpool also had two penalty claims denied, the first resulting in a booking for Sadio Mane for diving, even though there was contact, and the second was a handball by Bjorn Engels which blocked a shot by Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. VAR also confirmed the first decision, while the second situation apparently wasn’t even reviewed.
The referee in this game was Jonathan Moss, interestingly enough, the man who gave Tottenham Hotspur two controversial penalties at Anfield two years ago. Martin Atkinson, who refereed Liverpool’s 1-1 draw against Manchester United where he controversially failed to give a foul on Divock Origi in the buildup of Marcus Rashford’s goal for United, was in charge of the VAR this time.
Nonetheless, Mane got his revenge in full as he assisted Andy Robertson’s 87th-minute equalizer and scored the 94th-minute winner himself.
This is Andy Gray, analyzing the situation surrounding the offside decision for BeIN Sports.
