Two sides who find themselves firmly battling it out at the foot of the Premier Divison table, Waterford will host fellow scrappers Longford on Friday night.
Starting with the hosts, while Waterford might have seen their eye-catching run come to an abrupt end last week, the mood in their camp should still be at a real high. Asking a string of questions away at title contenders St Patrick’s Athletic, despite a hard-fought 2-1 defeat, The Blues have really managed to breathe life back into their campaign. Opening up Friday’s contest on home soil knowing that three points will see them find a route out of the relegation play-off spot, Head Coach Marc Bircham should be smelling a golden chance this weekend. Shocking many across Ireland as they managed to bag 12 points from just their last five top-flight contests, they have also managed to muster back-to-back victories on home soil. As for the visitors, while Waterford might have managed to find a much-needed boost over the past month, it appears that Longford are freefalling towards an immediate First Division return. Really failing to find their feet this season, Daire Doyle’s men already find themselves sat 15 points adrift of safety. Struggling to find any kind of boost and last seen getting hit with a 3-0 drumming against Finn Harps on home soil, they have remarkably failed to win any of their last 23 straight top-flight contests, a run that stems all the way back to March. Facing what could be another stern test this weekend, it should also be noted they hold a woeful record against Friday’s hosts. Including a 2-1 defeat on June 21st, Doyle’s side have lost each of their last five straight contests against Waterford.
