Wayne Rooney has told talkSPORT that Liverpool will win the Premier League title for sure next season if they sign Thiago Alcantara from Bayern Munich in the summer transfer window.
The former Manchester United and Everton star, who is now at Derby County in the Championship, believes that Thiago joining Liverpool this summer would be better than Barcelona forward Lionel Messi moving to City.
Liverpool have been strongly linked with former Barcelona central midfielder Thiago, while Argentina international star Messi is reportedly on the radar of City.
Rooney believes that the title race next season will be between Liverpool and City, and has backed the Reds to get the job done if they are able to secure the services of Thiago.
The Englishman told talkSPORT: “I think it is City or Liverpool [for the title]. Chelsea are making a lot of signings, some good signings.
“Man United have a lot of potential in the players they have got but I still think they are a year away. Chelsea with the new signings will possibly need a year to get everyone on the same songsheet.
“So I do think it is between City and Liverpool. And if Liverpool get Thiago from Bayern Munich, I think it is done [the title]. That is a better signing than Messi going to Man City.”
Good signing for Liverpool?
Thiago is one of the best central midfielders in the world, and his joining Liverpool this summer would make them stronger.
The 29-year-old played a key role in Bayern winning the Champions League this season, and he could have a similar impact at the Reds.
Liverpool are rated at 2/1 second favourites behind City by Betfair to make it back-to-back Premier League titles next season.
