(GSM) – Switzerland manager Ottmar Hitzfeld admits his side did not deserve to qualify from Group H in the wake of their goalless draw with Honduras. The stalemate was the last match of the group for the Swiss.
Switzerland provided the competition with an early shock after they ran out victorious against World Cup favorites Spain. However, a defeat to Chile before the lackluster draw against Honduras knocked the Swiss out of the tournament.
Chile now advance to face Brazil while Spain face a relatively easier battle against Portugal. Meanwhile the Swiss team will be heading back home but Hitzfeld knows that the fact that his team failed to find the back of the net against Honduras means that they don’t deserve to qualify.
“It took us a very long time to find our game and Honduras created chances before us,” he said.
“We then had chances of our own, but we didn’t deserve to qualify because we didn’t score.
“The disappointment tonight is very deep, because after our opening victory against Spain we had great hopes.
“Now we’ll go home and all we can do is concentrate on the future, on the Euro 2012 qualifiers.
“There is big disappointment. In the end there is only the win against Spain, but we have to leave with our heads held high even if we didn’t make it.”
