(GSM) – Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson insists the club did not take a gamble by fielding Owen Hargreaves against Wolverhampton Wanderers last Saturday.
Hargreaves suffered even more injury drama and is set to be ruled out for five more weeks with a hamstring injury after just returning from a two-year lay-off.
The 29-year-old was substituted just five minutes into his long-awaited return but Ferguson insists the club thought Hargreaves was in a fine physical condition after training ‘really well’ for more than a week.
“We were at the stage where we knew Owen’s knee was okay,” Ferguson told Key 103.
“His training performances for eight or nine days previously had been terrific.
“He had done really well, which is why we took the chance.
“But maybe the tension in the build-up for the lad was too much and he suffered because of it.”
The former Bayern München midfielder’s career has stalled because of injuries and he has last started a game in September 2008 against Chelsea.
