On Friday night, Bundesliga high-flyers Schalke will play host to Mainz at the Arena AufSchalke. While Schalke will know that hunting down runaway league leaders Bayern Munich is next to impossible, Domenico Tedesco’s side still remain in the driving seat to secure Champions League football come the end of the season.

For Domenico Tedesco’s Schalke side, Bundesliga’s youngest manager has done a stellar job of rebuilding Schalke into one of German’s elite clubs. After failing to qualify for the Champions League in their last five seasons, the Royal Blues currently sit second in the table and their recent run of form has seen them pick up some eye-catching results. While they may only sit two points clear of fifth spot, Schalke have now won their last three games on the bounce and have taken three points off fellow top-four hopefuls Hoffenheim and Bayern Leverkusen, they have also won their last three consecutive games at the Arena AufSchalke.

As for the visitors on Friday night, Mainz have been unable to replicate their brilliant form last season and after an impressive sixth-place finish last year, Sandro Schwarz’s Mainz side now know that they’re in a battle to maintain their Bundesliga status. Currently sat 16th in the table, while Mainz do hold a seven-point buffer over Hamburg, they still only remain a single place above the drop zone. As for their recent form, while Mainz have drawn their last two games in a row, they have now only managed to win one in their last seven matches, losing four of those.
