Having held talks which have been described as positive with the club, according to The Telegraph, Wout Weghorst is keen to stay at Manchester United past this summer.
United moved to bring the 30-year-old in in January, to boost their attacking ranks after Cristiano Ronaldo’s unceremonious exit, signing him on loan from Burnley for the rest of the season. There is no option for the 20-time English champions to turn the deal into a permanent one on their own, which means that if they want him, they’ll have to find an agreement with the Championship winners over a potential transfer fee.
Despite scoring just two goals and providing three assists in 27 appearances for United, Weghorst has played an important role in Erik ten Hag’s system, sometimes even dropping deeper to play like a No. 10, behind another striker. His 6’6” frame is obviously important in set-piece situations at both ends of the pitch, and he doesn’t appear to mind being a man for special assignments, without a regular place in the starting XI, as the club continue working on signing a new star striker.
United have been linked with a host of names in that respect, most notably Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane and Napoli’s Victor Osimhen.
