Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller has signed a new deal at Borussia Dortmund to keep him at the club until 2016.
Weidenfeller has made nearly 300 appearances for Dortmund in an 11-year spell with the club and has been a key figure in their charge to the UEFA Champions League final this season.
Juergen Klopp’s men face Bayern Munich in the final at Wembley on May 25 and Weidenfeller had no hesitation in signing a new deal with a club which has undergone a rapid transformation in recent times.
“Transferring to another club had never crossed my mind,” said Weidenfeller.
“What has grown here at Dortmund over the past few years is a uniquely positive football story which I want to play a big part in writing in the years to come.
“I am proud to be part of this strong-willed side which is a homogenous mixture of young and experienced players.”
Weidenfeller’s decision is good news for a club which is set to lose Mario Goetze to Bayern at the end of the season and could yet be without star striker Robert Lewandowski, who has been linked with Munich and Manchester United among others.
Director of sport Michael Zorc was keen to express his delight at tying down the 32-year-old for another three years and praised the keeper for his contribution to their success.
Zorc said: “We are really pleased that Roman has committed to us.
“He is an extraordinarily strong goalkeeper who has shown constantly top performances and made a major contribution to us winning the German titles in 2011 and 2012, as well as reaching the final of the Champions League this season.”
