Danny Welbeck’s good form for Sunderland has seen him rewarded with a call-up to the England squad for Tuesday’s friendly against Ghana.
The 20-year-old Manchester United striker, who moved to Sunderland on loan last August for the duration of the 2010-11 season, has scored six goals during his stint under Steve Bruce, form that has attracted the attention of England boss Fabio Capello.
With Spurs winger Aaron Lennon pulling out of the squad on Monday, the door has been opened for Welbeck, who could make his international debut from the bench at Wembley.
Capello could make as many as 11 changes to the side that defeated Wales 2-0 in a Euro 2012 qualifier on Saturday, with Andy Carroll expected to lead the strike force against the Black Stars.
Welbeck has represented the England Under-21 side on 10 occasions.
“I enjoy being part of the England Under-21s and I don’t like missing games,” Welbeck told the Newcastle Chronicle recently.
“It is fantastic to get picked for your country at any level and pulling on the Three Lions shirt means a lot to me. I’m at the stage of my career where I’m trying to make a name for myself.”
“Coming to Sunderland this season is part of that and playing for the England Under-21s is another part of that – my performances for the Under-21s actually helped me get noticed in the first place.”
