Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck says the club’s Champions League exit has been tough to take but he insists they must move on.
The Premier League champions have been involved in three of the last four Champions League finals, so to fall at this season’s group stages, in a group from which they were expected to qualify comfortably, has surprised everyone.
“Manchester United are expected to qualify and we haven’t,” Welbeck told The Sun.
“It’s tough but we don’t want to dwell on it.”
“You have to turn the situation into a positive. We have to move forward and the best way to do that is to learn from it and try and get better as a team.”
Welbeck has enjoyed a strong campaign so far following his season-long loan at Sunderland.
The marksman has since made his senior debut for England and has become a regular for Sir Alex Ferguson’s team, but the 21-year-old is not ready to dwell on his achievements just yet.
“It’s been a great year. My time at Sunderland was the making of me,” he said.
“I got my England call-up and then I came back to United and started quite a few games. But I don’t want to stop there, I want to carry on.”
“Everyone is hungry for success here and it’s a great environment to be in.”
