With a golden chance to move within touching distance of the top-two, Wellington Phoenix will welcome rock-bottom Newcastle to the Westpac Stadium on Friday morning.

Starting with the hosts, while Wellington may have fallen short against a resurging Brisbane Roar over the weekend, they have enjoyed what is becoming an impressive start to the new campaign. With their sights set on mounting a charge for the AFC Champions League spots, the Phoenix have won three of their last four outings and have a growing reputation for their performances at the Westpac Stadium. Yet to taste defeat on home soil since the 27th of October, Ufuk Talay’s men have also won four of their last five matches in front of their own supporters, a run highlighted by a 2-0 win over Western Sydney a fortnight ago.

As for the visitors, while the mood in Wellington’s camp might remain at a high, the same cannot be said for a struggling Newcastle. Already sat four points adrift at the foot of the A-League, the Jets once again underwhelmed in their 2-0 loss against Melbourne City last time out. Managing to record just a pair of victories since opening the new campaign, caretaker boss Craig Deans finds his side in the midst of a three-match losing run, including a 4-0 hammering away at Melbourne Victory earlier in the month. Hit with a 4-1 defeat the last time they made the trip to the Westpac Stadium, we’re backing a similar outcome on Friday morning.
