Wenger eyeing Swansea defender

A report from the Guardian is suggesting that Arsene Wenger is making Swansea City’s Ashley Williams a target for the summer transfer window after losing faith with his current central defensive partnership of Per Mertesacker and Thomas Vermaelen.

Williams has been superb for the Swans in the English Premier League this campaign and was the man who captained them to Capital One Cup glory last month.

He is also the captain of the Wales national team and seems to be a real leader on the pitch.

Wenger was hopeful that giving Vermaelen the captaincy after the departure of Robin van Persie would mean he took full control at the back, but his recent performance against Tottenham Hotspur was extremely poor and now, the French manager seems to be looking for a replacement.

Not only is Williams a solid defender that does the basics well, he is also able to play the ball to midfield with his feet and is an accomplished footballer, so would certainly fit in well with the Arsenal way of doing things.

It looks like a move that has massive potential to happen, but the Gunners might need to produce a fair bit of cash to lure the Wales international away from the Liberty Stadium.
