Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger says he will not step down after his side suffered a ‘humiliating’ 8-2 loss against Manchester United.
Wayne Rooney hit a hat-trick, Ashley Young a brace, while Danny Welbeck, Nani and Park Ji-Sung also netted as United mastered their Premier League rivals at Old Trafford on Sunday.
The loss leaves Arsenal with just one point from their opening three games, but Wenger said he should not be judged until the end of the season.
“I’m in a public job and I have to accept that. I make the right decisions for the club and I will continue to try to do that. The players we have sold, I also brought to the club,” Wenger said after the game.
“It’s difficult when you lose 8-2. It’s better that you don’t talk too much because it hurts and it looks like you’re looking for excuses.”
“I feel it was under very special circumstances and what’s important is we’ve played three games of the season. It’s not like it’s the end of the season, when you make a balanced judgement of the season.”
The Frenchman said he expected to sign South Korean forward Park Chu-Young, as well as another midfielder and defender, before the transfer window closes on August 31.
Wenger also said it was important to regain some of his injured or suspended stars, including Bacary Sagna, Thomas Vermaelen, Alex Song, Jack Wilshere and Gervinho, who all missed the clash against United.
“After a game like that it’s terribly painful. It hurts, it was humiliating. We were short in some areas, we had eight players out and they had class. They punished us in front of goals,” Wenger said.
Theo Walcott and Robin van Persie were on the scoresheet for Arsenal, with the latter also missing a first-half penalty with his team down 1-0.
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson leapt to the defence of Wenger, who he said deserved to be judged on the 15 years he had spent at Arsenal.
“It’s unfair the criticism of the man, the job he’s done for Arsenal for such a long period,” Ferguson told Sky Sports.
“He’s kept his philosophy and the football they play – he’s given Arsenal some fantastic entertaining players.”
“He’s always sold well which has always helped the Arsenal coffers and maybe people forget these things because we’re in a terrible cynical world now and when you lose a few games the judges are out.”
