(GSM) – Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger wants to talk with defender Sol Campbell over the prospects of staying on board for an additional season. Wenger insists he will be using the £30million transfer kitty expected to be available for him in the summer but believes Campbell’s stay may save him some of the cash.
The Arsenal boss will meet with his 35-year-old defender in three weeks’ time to discuss the latter’s future. Wenger is set to ask Campbell to remain at the Emirates next season.
With defender William Gallas out of contract in the summer and Johan Djourou recovering from a serious knee surgery, strengthening the defense would be the priority for Wenger.
Wenger said, “I will have to sit down with Sol Campbell because if he is on board, if he is focused and motivated, he is an important player here. He is not only an important player and a good player but he is a winner.
“Gallas can sign where he wants. We are trying to re-sign him but he is legally free to sign where he wants so I don’t know where he will go.”
Although Arsenal lost the game, Wenger was delighted with Campbell’s heroic performance against Tottenham.
“He was ready to die on Wednesday night to win the game and that is what you want from your squad,” Wenger added.
“On and off the pitch he is a big influence.”
