Arsene Wenger insists that his only focus in Arsenal’s Premier League run-in is their next game against Wolves on Wednesday night.
The Frenchman has guided his side to third place and, after slip-ups from Tottenham and Chelsea, victory at Molineux would see them five points clear of fourth-placed Spurs.
With automatic Champions League qualification firmly in his sights, the Gunners boss has called for speculation surrounding Arsenal’s remaining fixtures to stop, claiming that it is ‘impossible’ to predict where his side will finish.
“Nobody can really predict that because your performance on the day depends on you, but also depends on the other team as well,” Wenger told the club’s official website.
“You can have an idea but football has surprised us so many times, especially recently in the last two or three months.
“When it gets to the last sprint, the focus on the next game becomes the most important part because you are always tempted to anticipate.
“We have the experience to know just to deal with the next one and that is the only important thing.”
And with a top-four spot looming, Wenger urged his team to remain focused on the prize at hand.
“It has a big meaning for us because we want to play at the top but also because of where we came from, that would be a great achievement for us,” he said.
“This team has gone through difficult times but we know that we belong with the best and we have shown that again on Sunday. That is why it is important that we continue to go in a strong way.
“It is very intense. The closer you get to the end and you go for something important, the more the pressure is there. So to keep your nerve is vital.”
