Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger believes his team’s 1-0 away win over Marseille in the Champions League could be the turning point of their season.
An injury-time goal from substitute Aaron Ramsey gave Arsenal the win at the Stade Velodrome in their Group F clash on Wednesday.
Wenger, whose team is top of the group, said the win in France could give Arsenal the boost they needed after a poor start to the English Premier League season.
“Yes, this can be a big result for our season,” he said.
“It will help us. If we look back at the last five or six games, you see that we have had only one defeat (at Tottenham) so we are slowly getting there. Tonight will help.”
Arsenal are 10th in the Premier League after an indifferent start, but they have winnable games against Stoke City and Bolton on Sunday and Tuesday respectively.
Wenger said he was confident Ramsey would score when the chance arrived and added he needed to carefully handle the Wales international’s playing time with fellow midfielder Jack Wilshere yet to make an appearance this campaign because of an ankle injury.
“When you see Aaron in front of goal, you know you have a chance to score,” Wenger said.
“He is becoming a real goal-scorer. He has been injured for a year and I am conscious of how much Wilshere played last year.”
“I try to be a bit more cautious when I can. I do not want to over-play Aaron.”
Meanwhile, Marseille manager Didier Deschamps said it was a ‘cruel’ way for his team to lose after looking like they would collect a point.
“I was angry because I had warned them. One point would have been good for us,” the Frenchman said.
“It was a game of not many opportunities and this is cruel and disappointing for us.”
