Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has been dealt a blow after confirming Kieran Gibbs’ attempts to regain full fitness have suffered a setback.

The promising left-back underwent surgery for a hernia problem back in November, and the Gunners boss was hoping to have the 22-year-old back in time for the English Premier League’s festive fixtures.

“Kieran Gibbs has unfortunately had a setback and he is not back yet,” Wenger told the club’s official website.

“It’s very disappointing because we had good hope that he would be back for (Wednesday’s) game (away to Aston Villa), but he is not available.”

Wenger’s options have been bolstered with goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski and Japanese attacking option Ryo Miyaichi close to a return to action.

“Ryo is joining in normal training on Friday, so he is completely back from injury,” he said.

“Fabianski has practised (Tuesday) and should be available for next week.”
