Wenger urges his players to forget the derby defeat

Arsene Wenger is worried that Arsenal’s promising season could turn into an utter disappointment unless his players quickly forget the Tottenham defeat.

Even if Arsenal was seen as hot favourites in the eyes of online betting fans everywhere, the Gunners managed to squander a two-goal lead and lost the North London derby with Wenger watching in despair.

The Frenchman fears such a defeat could have a devastating effect on the squad.

“That’s the danger. Mentality can become an issue. I don’t think it will be but that’s the fear. If it’s repeated then it can become something that can block the team,” Wenger said.

“We need to bounce back as quickly as possible. It’s important we win, not vital. If it were vital then it would mean the club would die if we don’t win and I don’t think it will.

Arsene Wenger is clearly more worried by the psychological state of his players than the upcoming match with Braga.

“We don’t deny what happened on Saturday in terms of facts. We could not take our chance to go top and if you look overall to our position, we are third, two points behind the leaders.

“We are top of our Champions League Group, we are in the quarter final of the Carling Cup, we haven’t started the FA Cup yet so overall the season will be what we make of it.

“Even if we have regrets about not doing much better, maybe Chelsea and Manchester United will feel the same.

“If you look too much at the result of course you become tense. You have to release the tension and you do it by focusing as much on the technical side.”

The Gunners now need to beat Braga in order to improve their chances of qualifying from the top of the group, as well as restore some of the lost confidence before the Premiership campaign resumes.

“If you compare our away record in Europe, you will see it’s not worse than any other team – but this will be a difficult game.

“It is important for us that we come back not only with one point but three points to give us a very good chance to finish top of the group.”
