Wenger wary of cornered Wolves

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger wants his players to focus on the task at hand as they prepare to face Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Arsenal defeated title challengers Manchester City 1-0 on Sunday to strengthen to strengthen their grip on third place in the English Premier League.

With Tottenham badly out of form, Wenger’s team now appear favourites to secure the final automatic Champions League qualification berth.

But as his team prepare to travel to Molineux on Wednesday, the Frenchman has reminded his team the match against the competition’s bottom club is no formality.

“Look at the results in the Premier League and you see how vital the next game is,” Wenger said.

“You need to focus, teams drop points when you don’t expect them to, when they are favourites.

“It is important on two fronts – it is important for our league position, but also we have been remarkably consistent over the last two months. It is important that we continue that.”

“Let’s not anticipate – when it gets to the last sprint the focus on the next game becomes the most important part because you are always tempted to anticipate other results.

“We have the experience to know that we just have to deal with the next match. That is the only important thing in fact.”

Wolves caretaker manager Terry Connor wants his team to keep fighting until they are mathematically relegated.

Connor’s side are six points adrift of safety, with just six matches of the campaign remaining.

“I don’t want dead rubbers at the end of the season,” Connor said.

“I signed up for 38 competitive games in the Premier League and that’s what we should try and play.

“Yes, we’re six points adrift and everyone has written us off, but if we can play 38 competitive games, that means we go to Wigan with some chance of staying in the Premier League.”
