Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has revealed he is not going to make a move for Hamburg defender Vincent Kompany this year, despite being interested in the defender since he was young, according to The Sun.
Wenger had been expected to strengthen his back-line as he looks to rework his side ahead of the 2008/09 term.
Kompany, 22, signed for Hamburg from Anderlecht in 2006 and has previously been linked with a move to Emirates Stadium, with Wenger publicly expressing his interest in centre-back.
However, Wenger appears to have decided on other priorities now does not seem to think his defence needs bolstering.strengthening.
Wenger told The Sun: “I have been interested in Vincent Kompany ever since he was 16, but I am not interested in him this year.
“There is nobody I need for my team’s defensive department.
“I still follow Kompany’s progress all the time and I know him very, very well. But he will not be an Arsenal player next season – and you can print that.
“I know all the good Belgian players. Arsenal are following a number of them with great interest, although I won’t name names.”
